Activating methods

Think-Pair-Share

Objective:

  • Cooperative learning, introduction, review, brainstorming, etc.

Procedure:

  • Think individually and gather your thoughts

  • Discuss in pairs/groups

Objective:

  • Introduction, review of knowledge and skills

Procedure:

  • Show key terms

  • Randomly select participants to explain the terms

Worldcafé

Objective:

  • Cooperative learning, discussion, and reflection

Procedure:

  • One table with paper and pens per topic

  • Each table is assigned a host who introduces the topic to the groups in turn

  • The results of each group are presented to the next group

Flashlight

Objective:

  • Getting acquainted, introduction to the topic

Procedure:

  • Topic is announced

  • Brief comment (verbally/in writing in the chat or on the whiteboard) from each participant

Whiteboard

Objective:

  • Identify and activate prior knowledge

Procedure:

  • State the topic and task

  • Share the prepared, structured whiteboard

  • Have students work on the whiteboard individually or in groups

Breakoutrooms

Objective:

  • Combining social and content-based learning, acquiring, applying, and deepening knowledge

Procedure:

  • Division into groups

  • Groups work on assignments, with input or assistance from the tutor

  • Presentation by the individual groups in the course

Muddiest Point

Objective:

  • Learning success monitoring, formative assessment, feedback

Procedure:

  • Question is written on a whiteboard or digital pinboard ("In your opinion, what was the weakest part of the event and why?")

  • Participants have a deadline by which they can provide feedback

Marble Groups

Objective:

Procedure:

One-Minute-Paper

Objective:

Peer-Feedback

Objective:

  • Meet in an expert group, where the individual experts discuss different topics with each other

Pecha Kucha

Objective:

  • Apply, deepen, and filter knowledge

Procedure:

  • Presentation by individual participants or groups

  • 20 slides each, with 20 seconds per slide

Mapping

Objective:

  • Getting to know each other

Procedure:

  • The moderator asks questions one after the other, e.g., about the last trip, etc.

  • Participants position themselves on the map.

Dance of the molecules

Objective:

  • Icebreaker, activation, group formation

Procedure:

  • Participants are understood as individual atoms.

  • Atoms should come together based on questions or color cards, etc.

Speed Dating

Objective:

  • Icebreaker, activation, exchange of experiences

Procedure:

  • Two participants exchange ideas on a topic in a breakout session.

  • After 5 minutes, they switch and exchange ideas with another participant.

"Kugellager"

Objective:

  • Exchange, activation

Procedure:

  • The moderator chooses a topic.

  • Participants are divided into two equal groups, each forming the inner or outer circle.

  • After 2 minutes, the outer circle moves clockwise.

Picture Cards

Objective:

  • associative introduction

Procedure:

  • Participants should select picture cards that they associate with the topic, feedback, or something else.

Six Thinking Hats

Objective:

  • Exchange from different perspectives

Procedure:

  • The white hat: Analytical thinking, focus on facts, objective attitude

  • The red hat: Emotional thinking and feeling, focus on feelings and opinions, subjective attitude

  • The black hat: Critical thinking, risk assessment, problems, skepticism, describing criticism and fears, objective attitude

  • The yellow hat: Optimistic thinking, what is the best-case scenario, speculative attitude

  • The green hat: Creative, associative thinking, new ideas, creativity, constructive attitude

  • The blue hat: Organizing, moderating thinking, overview of processes, big picture attitude

Walt Disney Methode

Objective:

  • Exchange from different perspectives

Procedure:

  • Dreamer (visionary, idea generator)

  • Realist (implementer, doer)

  • Critic (quality manager, controller)

Packing Suitcases

Objective:

  • Conclusion, consolidation of content

Procedure:

  • Participants should write down on a whiteboard (representing a suitcase) what they have learned from the course.

  • The moderator summarizes.

5-Finger- Feedback

Objective:

  • Feedback

Procedure:

  • Thumb: "What content did I particularly like?"

  • Index finger: "I noticed this, and I wanted to mention it."

  • Middle finger: Content that the participants did not like so much.

  • Ring finger: Connections that can be made with the course—for example, content that is similar to what has been learned, or contexts in which the new information can be used.

  • Little finger: Content that was not covered sufficiently in the course and that the participants would have liked to see dealt with in more detail.

Change of Aattitude

Objective:

  • To avoid long periods of sitting in online courses

Procedure:

Thinking Tour

Objective:

  • Movement in the online course, brainstorming

Procedure:

  • Participants are asked to identify aspects/factors related to a topic

  • Communicate the topic to participants

  • Participants are asked to move around the room with a sheet of paper in their hands and brainstorm for the next 5 minutes

Walk and Talk

Objective:

  • Movement in the online course, cooperative learning, exchange

Procedure:

  • Divide participants into pairs

  • Pairs exchange phone numbers

  • Set a specific time for participants to exchange information and walk during that time

Future Discussion

Objective:

  • Exchange ideas, deepen knowledge

Procedure:

  • Divide participants into groups: red = fearful, black = skeptical, gold = optimistic

  • The topic is considered from each perspective and arguments are prepared for each role

  • Introductory statements from each group

  • Group discussion

  • Derivation of recommendations or a shared vision for the future
